Are You a Good Candidate for LAP-BAND® Surgery?
LAP-BAND® surgery is a restrictive weight loss surgery that uses a gastric band to limit the amount of food that you are able to intake. LAP-BAND® surgery can be an excellent way to help you lose weight when other weight loss methods have failed, but the LAP-BAND® procedure is not for everyone.
There are some things that will need to be considered by your doctor and a surgeon that specializes in the LAP-BAND® procedure to determine whether or not you would make a good candidate for the surgery. There are also a few some things that could make LAP-BAND® surgery virtually impossible for you, and in this event, you would need to consider other options for weight loss.
To begin, you will need to be within a certain age range, usually over 18 and under 55, in order to qualify for the procedure. You must be seriously overweight, with a Body Mass Index that is at least 30 percent higher than your recommended weight, though many doctors may only perform the surgery if you are 100 pounds or more over your ideal weight for your height.
You will have to have been suffering from being overweight for at least five years, and have made serious attempts at trying to loose your excess weight with no success or only short-term success at your weight loss. You will also have to prove to your doctor that you are serious about making any necessary lifestyle changes after your surgery that will make you be successful in your weight loss.
You must be in overall good health. Those patients that are suffering from severe heart disease or lung disease will not make a good candidate for the LAP-BAND® procedure. There are also some other diseases as well that if you have them, will make you ineligible for LAP-BAND®. Additionally, if after an evaluation from your doctor it is determined that you are no serious about the dietary rules that will be in place after your LAP-BAND® surgery, or are not willing to commit to frequent monitoring after surgery, it may also be deemed that you are a poor candidate for the surgery to be performed.
