Education
After graduating from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1990, Dr. Nguyen embarked on his general surgical training at the University of Minnesota Hospitals and Clinics in Minneapolis, where he received an excellent resident teaching award. He completed his training at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he gained significant experience in laparoscopic surgical techniques and was again awarded for his skill. Dr. Nguyen continued to study cancer and cancer surgery at UCLA and then went on to study as a colorectal surgeon at the University of Texas.
Dat T. Nguyen, M.D., returned to California in 1999 and joined the Permanente Medical Group at South San Francisco, where he used his considerable skill to perform laparoscopic colorectal and bariatric surgery. In fact, he performed the first laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in the Northern California Kaiser Hospital system. In 2002, Dr. Nguyen moved to the Tri-Valley area and, in 2004, he opened his own surgery practice.
Now, Dr. Nguyen works as a bariatric and colorectal surgeon associated with the San Ramon Regional Medical Center and the ValleyCare Medical Center, serving patients from Pleasanton and East Bay. He performs mostly minimally invasive surgery; in fact, he now performs most colon and rectal surgeries and all bariatric surgery procedures, including gastric bypass and LAP-BAND® System surgeries, using laparoscopic techniques.
