You may have heard of some of the amazing transformations that are possible with gastric bypass surgery. Indeed, the results of bariatric procedures can be life-changing. One of the most advanced weight loss procedures is Roux-en-Y surgery, a gastric bypass procedure that helps morbidly obese patients lose weight by limiting their stomach size and caloric absorption. Dat T. Nguyen, M.D., is pleased to perform the Roux-en-Y procedure at our weight loss surgery center in Pleasanton. Dr. Nguyen is a highly esteemed Roux-en-Y surgeon in the San Ramon and East Bay area and has achieved remarkable results for many patients. To learn more about the procedure, or to schedule a consultation with Dr. Nguyen, contact our bariatric surgeon today.
Roux-en-Y surgery is a gastric bypass procedure that restricts stomach size and allows food to bypass parts of the stomach and small intestine during digestion. This bypass inhibits absorption of calories and nutrients, while the reduced stomach size promotes a feeling of fullness sooner after eating. The fact that Roux-en-Y surgery is both restrictive and malabsorptive differentiates it from LAP-BAND® System surgery, since the latter is solely restrictive. The Roux-en-Y procedure is performed at our Pleasanton office for East Bay-area patients seeking an effective surgical weight-loss method.
Dr. Nguyen performs the two-step Roux-en-Y procedure at our office in Pleasanton. To begin, an experienced anesthesiologist administers a general anesthesia. Next, Dr. Nguyen then performs the first step of the procedure which involves making the stomach smaller by stapling it into a (smaller) upper and a (larger) lower section. The upper section, called the pouch, will hold food and will be connected to the small intestine, while the lower section will be bypassed altogether in the digestive process. Since the pouch is quite small, patients will feel full more quickly and for longer after eating. In the second step, Dr. Nguyen connects the pouch to a section of the small intestine, creating a new route (the “Roux limb”) for food to pass through. This new, shorter route minimizes caloric and nutrient absorption by the small intestine.
Dr. Nguyen uses a minimally-invasive, laparoscopic technique for appropriate patients. This technique distinguishes him among Roux-en-Y surgeons in San Ramon and the East Bay area since laparoscopy allows him to avoid making large incisions and exposing the entire abdomen.
Successful weight loss. Since the gastric bypass procedure is both restrictive (of the stomach size) and malabsorptive (of calories and nutrients), it tends to be more effective than exclusively restrictive surgeries, since the malabsorptive component can compensate, to a degree, for occasional overeating. Patients who follow post-operative lifestyle recommendations typically lose about 60 to 70 percent of their body weight in the years following surgery. Some of the possible results of bariatric surgery are shown in our before-and-after gallery.
Improved health and lifestyle. After Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery at our Pleasanton practice, many of our patients have enjoyed life-changing results. The marked weight loss after surgery eliminates or improves numerous health problems associated with obesity, including hyperlipidemia, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, acid reflux, swelling of the legs, and back and joint pain. Moreover, people who successfully lose weight with bariatric surgery enjoy a markedly improved quality of life and can participate more freely in family and social activities.
Roux-en-Y surgery has potential complications common in any abdominal surgery, including infection, hemorrhage, hernia, bowel obstruction, and formation of blood clots. Complications specific to Roux-en-Y surgery include leakage of fluids between the stomach and bowel, dumping syndrome (nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea), and nutritional deficiencies. There is also the risk that patients may not achieve their desired weight loss, or will regain lost weight – a possibility primarily for patients who do not follow the dietary and lifestyle guidelines for life after weight loss surgery.
